Fun Things To Do With the Family This Christmas
The holiday season is all about spending time with your family and loved ones. While there is plenty to enjoy about giving and receiving gifts on Christmas Day, the time leading up to and just after the big day can be filled with lots of great activities to bring your family together.
At The Beacon Inn, we value family and the downtime that we get around the festive season, so we thought we’d share some fun things to do with the family this Christmas, 2021. Hopefully, you’ll find inspiration on our list to make your time together that extra bit more special.
Put up decorations
It’s never too early to get yourself in the festive spirit by hanging decorations. Whether you want to put up the tree and decorate it together or make some paper decorations with a crafting kit, you can make your home feel unique. Kids love to make their own decorations, so why not get together old wrapping paper and Christmas cards to recycle as part of the crafting fun?
Bake some treats
Once your home looks festive, it also needs to smell festive. What better way than by baking some treats? You could make Christmas cookies and decorate them together – just make sure you’ve got plenty of different options for the mixture and toppings so that everyone can design their own treats. Not only is it fun to do the baking, but you also get a tasty snack at the end!
Send out cards
Whether you make your own Christmas cards or find some nice ones at the store, writing and mailing out your cards can be a shared experience. Everyone can sign their name – even the family dog can leave a paw print! – and if you’re sending them to neighbors, the kids can go and hand-deliver them.
Mail out presents
If you’re unable to visit extended family and friends this Christmas, then you’re running out of time to mail gifts. Get the whole family involved with preparing, wrapping, and labeling your gifts as a helpful production line to get everything sent out on time.
Visit local attractions
At this time of year, your local town will undoubtedly be hosting something festive. From turning on the lights to special Christmas-themed events, you and the family can get together in the local community. It’s a handy alternative if you’ve not managed to do your own decorations or if you don’t have room to host an event in your home.
Here in Lewes, we have the Lewes Lights event where local businesses, as well as homeowners, decorate their homes in an attempt to win awards for best decorations. You can even get a driving map for a tour of all the buildings that will be lit up.
Have a games night
While we all enjoy sitting down to watch a festive movie (see our final tip), there is something satisfying about turning the television and any other screens off. Grab some of your favorite family games, some snacks, and sit around the table together for some quality time one evening.
Volunteer with a charity
One of the key messages at this time of year should be to look after one another, which is why we’d recommend volunteering your time with a local charity if you have it to spare. That could be donating food to a worthy cause or helping out in person at your local homeless shelter. Contact your local charities to find out if they need your help – they’re always grateful for extra assistance over winter.
Watch Christmas movies
Finally, once you’ve exhausted all your other options, it’s time to settle down for some festive family films. You can’t go wrong with some of these corny Christmas classics:
- The Muppets Christmas Carol
- Home Alone
- Jingle All The Way
- The Santa Clause
- The Grinch Who Stole Christmas
- Miracle on 34th Street
- It’s a Wonderful Life
- National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
